Tran Thi Thuy is a devoted campaigner for justice, for both herself and other victims of government land grabs in Ben Tre Province. A Hoa Hao Buddhist and member of Viet Tan, Tran Thi Thuy was arrested on August 16, 2010 under the accusation of “attempting to throw the socialist government”. Held in pre-trial detention for nearly a year, she was later sentenced to five years in prison followed by three years house arrest. During her time in prison, Tran Thi Thuy suffered from a uterine tumor and was continuously denied medical treatment for not admitting her “guilt”. She was also subjected to forced manual labor including the husking of cashew nuts, an activity that produces potentially fatal fumes and has left caustic burns on her skin. In 2011, the United Working Group on Arbitrary Detention ruled that the Hanoi government’s detention and conviction of Tran Thi Thuy and six other activists was in violation of international law. Tran Thi Thuy was released from prison in August 2018 and placed under house arrest.
