Dinh Nguyen Kha is an activist, computer repairman, and student at the Long An University of Economics and Industry. Kha is a member of Vietnam’s Patriotic Youth, a banned group of students, artists, and young professionals who promote social justice and human rights. Kha and Nguyen Phuong Uyen, who is also a member of Patriotic Youth League, were arrested for distributing leaflets critical of the government. The leaflets were signed by the Patriotic Youth League. An appeals court in the southern province of Long An reduced the two bloggers’ sentences on 16 August 2013. Kha’s sentence was reduced from eight years to six years in prison but the three years of house arrest remains. Kha was denied medical treatment following an operation to remove a tumor from his stomach in November 2016.
