On September 10, 2008 the police raided Pham Van Troi’s house and seized him. Since 2006 Pham Van Troi has been repeatedly summoned by the police and assaulted for his human rights activism and being associated with Nguyen Van Dai and Le Thi Cong Nhan. On June 28, 2008 Pham Van Troi was subjected to "public denunciation" by around 300 people and Communist Party members and beaten up in the presence of the police. He was on a visit at the democracy activist Vi Duc Hoi’s house together with Ngo Quynh, a fellow activist, when the police raided the Vi Duc Hoi’s residence in Lang Son for a "citizen ID check". The three men were brought to the police station. On their way to the police station, they were humiliated, threatened and brutally beaten by a crowd of people.
