As college student, Ngo Quynh has particpated in various student protests against China. During the Olympic Torch Relay on April 29, 2008 he was arrested and beaten when trying to participate in a peaceful demonstration. On June 28, 2008, because of their visit to democracy activist, Vi Duc Hoi, Ngo Quynh and fellow democracy activist Pham Van Troi were subjected to serious physical abuse and public denounciation. They were beaten and subjected to psychological harassment by approximately 300 people and Communist Party Members and were taken to the police station for interrogation.

On September 10, 2008 he was arrested and is currently in detention in Ha Dong province.
